How NHS IVF Funding Works
NICE guidelines recommend that women under 40 who have been trying to conceive for 2 years should be offered 3 full cycles of IVF. However, each local Integrated Care Board (ICB) sets its own criteria and number of funded cycles.
In practice, the number of funded cycles ranges from 1 to 3 depending on your area. Some ICBs also fund treatment for women aged 40–42, typically offering 1 cycle.
Common Eligibility Criteria
- Age: Most ICBs fund IVF for women aged 23–39, with some extending to 42
- BMI: Typically between 19–30 (some Scottish boards allow up to 35)
- Existing children: Most ICBs require neither partner to have living children from any relationship
- Smoking: Both partners must usually be non-smokers
- Duration trying: Usually 2 years of unprotected intercourse (or 6 IUI cycles for same-sex couples)

Scotland and Wales
Scotland offers a national policy of 3 funded IVF cycles for eligible couples, with a BMI limit of 35 and age limit of 40. Wales currently offers 2 cycles for women under 40 and 1 cycle for ages 40–42.
